Home construction in the Columbia River Gorge

that's beautiful, efficient, and healthy for your family.

Green Thumb Projects is a green-building construction company based in Hood River, Oregon that is committed to the ideal that homes should not only be built well, but built in a manner that respects the people who live in them and the environment.  From super-insulated exterior walls and all non-toxic paints to sustainable harvested wood, solar power, and simple-to-use gray water irrigation systems, our custom craftsmen build high-efficiency homes that built to last and are great to live in.

We are custom home builders with a passion for high-quality green building.  Our services include all phases of construction and construction planning.  From framing and custom cabinetry to tile-setting and roofing, our goal is to build quality construction with non-toxic materials that are healthy for your family and the environment.  While every project will vary based on the client's goals, many green building features cost little more than conventional products, but make your home more valuable and give real savings on heating and cooling costs.

  Some of our green building options include:

  • high-insulation walls and air sealing to maximize energy efficiency;

  • all non-toxic paints, stains, finishes and glues;

  • blown cellulose insulation made from recycled materials;

  • sustainably-harvested (FSC Certified) and salvaged wood;

  • gray water and rainwater re-use systems,

  • use of reflective "cool roof" materials;

  • and solar electric and hot water systems.

For customers interested in a truly unique and high-efficiency building, we also offer strawbale construction which uses carbon negative strawbales, along with post and beam structural support, to achieve one of the most environmentally conscious building forms available. Green Thumb Projects recently completed a Hood River build of the first 3-story strawbale townhouses in the United States.

Our local partners include the top electricians, plumbers and heating and cooling companies experts in the Columbia Gorge.
